Celebrating artists inspired by the sea

Blue Minds, an artist-led exhibition of 27 world-leading contemporary creatives, including Aigana Gali, Andrea Hamilton, Marcus Lyon, Emma Critchley, Mariele Neudecker, Anne De Carbuccia, Karolina Woolf, Maya Sanbar and many more. The collective frames the ocean as an endless source of inspiration and highlights why a healthy ocean matters. Inspired by the tireless work of marine biologists and in association with the Blue Marine Foundation, Blue Minds mission is to highlight the importance of ocean conservation through a creative medium.

Conceived by Blue Marine Ambassadors to inspire hope, this immersive show offers soundscapes, photography, installations, paintings, wearable art brands,  ceramics, films, sculpture,  workshops, talks, interactive media and discussion rooms.

FESTIVAL PROGRAMME

Friday, June 25th, 11:00 - 12:00

  • Mariele Neudecker and Emma Critchley in conversation with curator Nico Kos Earle 

Mariele Neudeckeris a German artist who works with a range of mediums, such as sculpture, installation, film and photography. Her practice investigates the formation and historical dissemination of cultural constructs around the natural world.

Emma Critchley is a British artist who uses a combination of photography, film, sound and installation to explore the human relationship with the underwater environment as a political, philosophical and environmental space.

Nico Kos Earle is a curator, poet and writer, she was born in Ireland and raised in Paris. Member of the Critics Society. Her work is highly collaborative and focuses ono developing artists in early to mid career through storytelling across all platforms.

  • Photographer Anne De Carbuccia in conversation with filmmaker Maya Sanbar & curator Nico Kos Earle

Anne De Carbuccia is an Italian environmental artist, photographer and founder of One Planet One Future.

Maya Sanbar is a London based Palestinian-Lebanese multi-disciplinary artist, with a practice centered on storytelling. Her work explores both physical and psychological boundaries, immersive and site specific, her installations highlight the elements we share and help us to mediate the space we occupy.

  • Sculptor Emma Elliott in conversation with Rosie Pearson

Emma Elliott MRSS is a British sculptor interested in the incongruous and hypocritical aspects of humanity, and the impermanence and fragility of the natural world.

  • Marcus Lyon in conversation with curator Nico Kos Earle

Marcus Lyon is a British artist who has created extensive bodies of work on dance, identity & globalisation. His works are held in both private and international collections, including the Detroit Institute of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Arts Council Collection (UK) and the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, Washington DC.

TALK 1

"Abstract Expressionism: The Story of the NY School" with Rachel Barnes

Monday 28th June

11:30 - 12:30 art talk

During our Monday morning talk for Blue Marine Foundation we will unravel the development of the Abstract Expressionist movement in post-World War II America covering the artists such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler & Willem de Kooning. The talk will be presented by Rachel Barnes.

Mrs Barnes has lectured at Stories of Art, Tate Museums, National Gallery, Sotheby's Institute of Art and the Royal Academy. She has had 16 art books published including Gustave Klimt and Salvador Dali by Quercus publishing house.

"In Search of the Sublime" with Dr Kathy McLauchlan

During our Wednesday morning talk for Blue Marine Foundation we will unravel the notion of Sublime Art. This theory was developed by Edmund Burke in the 18th century. He defined sublime as an artistic effect showing the strongest emotion the mind is capable of feeling, the greatness in art beyond all possibility of imitation, measurement or calculation.

Dr Kathy McLauchlan has lectured at Stories of Art, Victoria & Albert Museum, the Open University, Birbeck College, The Art Society and Morley College.
